Abstract: One of the virtues of pragmatic methodology is the commitment to inquiry as problem-solving. This allows inquirers to throw into relief the ideological obstacles that result from reifying and hypostatizing modes of coping that ‘worked’ to resolve earlier problems. That these obstacles reflect distorting constraints to further inquiry is well-discussed. However, in focusing on the uniqueness of novel problems, it is sometimes the case that terms rejected for good reasons in prior contexts, may be reconstructed in the present as a prerequisite getting as good a grip on the problematic situation as possible. It is my contention that in the effort to remain pluralist, open-ended, and fallibilist, the concept of ‘system’ has been too quickly aligned with monistic block thinking or ‘apart thought’. Several have argued that pragmatic political theory laudably follows Dewey in refraining from ‘global’ analyses noting that such analyses falsify the local, different, and qualitatively unique characteristics that are the lifeblood of democratic processes. I argue that an effort to get the problematic situation correct, in our intensively globalized position today, requires a resuscitation of the concept of system if pragmatic inquiry and critique is to be descriptively adequate. Perhaps counterintuitively, the path to arrive at this conclusion is through one of the alternative modes of thinking of human community, ‘forms of life’, pragmatically understood.
